Are Nail Fungus Infections Contagious

Yes, please be aware that nail fungus infections are infectious and can spread from person to person in many different ways.

The ways you can contact them from other people is when you share the same bathrooms as in public shower stalls, locker rooms and bathrooms, these places are usually humid and the people who use them often walk around in bare feet. Any fungus which gets deposited on the floor as they walk around gets picked up by those who did not have them previously just by walking across the floor.

It is also contractible from nail files and emery boards. It is the reason it is not good hygiene practice to share your nail files with other people as you can never tell what they carry on their nails particularly when their is no outward signs of impending infection.

It is also advisable that you not walk around in bare foot in public bathrooms, shower stalls and locker rooms, Always ensure that you wear some form of suitable footwear for these areas. especially if you are a frequent visitor to such places. However, if you think that you may already have an infection you should start treating it immediately. For more information click the link below.

Guide To Prevent Nail Fungus

Do all you can to prevent nail fungus and to reduce the likelihood of any recurrent infections if you have already suffered with it, by following some of the guidelines below, practice good hand and foot hygiene and, where possible, follow the recommended practices below to help you to remain fungus free.

Keep your nails short, clean and as dry as possible.

Trim nails straight across and file down thickened areas.

Thoroughly dry your hands and feet, including between your toes, after bathing.

Wear appropriate socks. Synthetic socks that take away moisture may be best at keeping your feet dryer than cotton or wool socks, which may be more comfortable to wear but they retain the moisture they absorb, change them as often as necessary throughout the day, especially if your feet sweat excessively, if you are at work, carry some spares.

If possible try and remove your shoes occasionally during the day and particularly after any exercise activities.

Wear a different pair of shoes every day, this is even more important if you cannot wear open toed footwear.

Use an anti-fungal spray or powder on your feet and on the insides of your shoes to prevent any fungus spores from growing.

Wear rubber gloves when washing up, or other cleaning tasks, this protects your hands from overexposure to water, after use turn the gloves inside out to dry.

Do not trim or pick at the skin around your nails as this can cause the ingress of germs, and if you are in the habit of biting your nails now is the time to make a real big effort to stop.

Always avoid walking barefoot in public places, wear suitable footwear around public swimming pools, showers, gyms and all other areas.

If you go to a manicurist or pedicurist choose a reputable manicure and pedicure salon, ensure all the salon’s instruments are sterilized, this is very important, better still take your own.

Although it may be difficult, especially if you are young, and all your friends do it, stop painting your nails and refrain from wearing artificial nail extensions, this applies if in particular if you already have a nail fungus disorder, although it may be tempting to hide nail fungal infections under a coat of nail varnish, or stick-on artificial extensions, doing this this can trap unwanted moisture and worsen any infection you may have already.

Always wash your hands after touching an infected nails as there fungus is easily transferred.

Nail Fungus And Artificial Nails

Nail fungus and artificial nails have become very popular, especially among teenagers, they have become very fashionable, especially in urban areas, artificial nails have also become synonymous with nail fungus infections It follows then that in addition to their finger nails, they are just as enthusiastic to use them on their toenails make their feet look more attractive especially in open-toed footwear. However, women have also been known to use artificial nails to cover up a nail fungus infection, this has resulted in the expression “artificial nail fungus”. Unfortunately, although beautifying the nails it doesn’t cure or solve any problem at all, in fact it makes it worse, to explain this further, The fungi that causes nail fungus flourishes in a favorable environment, like one with humidity and darkness, when you apply artificial nails to the already infected toe nails, it creates an environment that is both dark and has a lot of moisture, since these fungi grow only in areas that are airless, and on feet that are both damp and warm, the artificial nail thus inhibits the easy flow of air around the toenail.

Fungal nail infections are more common among the toe nails than among the finger nails as already stated, but it should be noted that artificial nails attached to the real finger nail is a big contributor to the spread of the fungal infection.

It is understandable that when nails look yellowed as a result of the infection, the natural inclination is to want to keep them out of view because it may make you feel self conscious or uncomfortable, particularly if people begin staring at your problem, But please believe me when I tell you that when you when you hide your bad nails under artificial ones, you are creating a perfect environment that will ensure further growth and spread of the fungus. So, while they are covered up, they may make you look and feel better but your own nails are deteriorating badly as a result as the infection worsens.

In extreme cases it may not be possible to hide the condition any longer as the nail underneath becomes so bad that it is virtually impossible to even apply the artificial nails, for this reason it is best to take action straightaway if you suspect you have this condition.

The spread of the nail fungus is becoming more common as time goes by, especially with the advent of numerous beauty salons springing up everywhere, if they are not fastidious in their hygiene standards they can become a breeding ground for nail fungus, it is therefore very important to make sure the establishment you may go upholds these high standards.

Tips And Things To Be Aware Of When Treating Nail Fungus

Here are a few notes on treating nail fungus, tips and things to be aware of before treatment begins. Nail fungus has always been a major problem since it was first diagnosed, and in consequence these people have been driven to take desperate measures to fix their problem, many have tried all the conventional methods of treatment, and some have been more adventurous. Surgery, topical solutions, medicine and various plant remedies, and a great many home remedies have been developed to permanently cure this problem.

So many people, eager to rid themselves of this condition, buy countless medicines and various solutions that has helped to fuel a surge in the number of treatments being produced to boost the pharmaceutical maker’s profits.

Therein lies the problem though as the people who suffer from this condition can become desperate and will try each and every product that comes along in the hope of eradicating it, having said that, there are a few good products on the market that actually work reasonably well, but there are many others that are completely useless and do not work at all, and the makers of these products know it, they make their living from trading on other peoples misery, whilst at the same time managing to stay within the law by careful wording on the packaging of the products.

Such medications taken in a haphazard fashion are not usually efficacious in bringing about a cure to the condition of nail fungus, as it is important to understand exactly what the condition is, what causes it and other factors, only by getting to grip with the root cause of the problem is the treatment likely to effective, any anti-fungal nail treatments such as creams or ointment bought over the counter and used by itself is very unlikely to be effective at curing the condition, so a more systemic approach is needed.

This is where oral medicine comes in, as approved medicines such as these and those prescribed by doctors should quickly begin work on treating nail fungus, working as they do, from the inside, out.

Nail Disorders – Nail Fungus Infection

If you found this site there is a distinct possibility you have some form of nail disorder, chances are it will be nail fungus, but it is important to get the correct diagnosis before you do anything so please read the most pertinent articles on these pages, some cases of fungus may be blatantly obvious, but sometimes only proper analysis will determine exactly what is responsible for the the cause of the infection.
Most of the articles here will be fairly brief so you do not get baffled by science, but they will explain, in simple terms, what nail fungus infection is, what causes it, how one can attempt to cure it and treatment and preventive measures you may take to ensure that you considerably lower the risk of a recurrence or preventing you from getting this condition at all.

Nail fungus, or to give it its medical name, Onychomycosis is caused by tiny fungus organisms that can be easily contacted by anyone.

If you already have this condition you are not alone in your plight, as official estimates have shown that over nine million people in the U.S. have it and also several million people in Canada, because of it’s contagious nature, and the fact that many people are probably unaware of it, it’s hardly surprising that the numbers of reported cases is quite large.

Nail fungus infections are really hard to spot in their early stages of growth, as they only become obvious when they are fully established under the toenails, as is more frequently the case, or the fingernails, which is less common, they can then appear as a yellow spot which gradually spreads until it infects all parts of the nail and further spreads to all the other individual toe or fingernails.
It is particularly easy for the fungus to survive in the toenails because it is a very hospitable environment for it to grow in, this is because most people wear shoes that do not offer adequate ventilation, as it spreads quickly in warm, humid, dark environments, which provides the optimal reproductive conditions for them.
